Pragatisheel Mahila Sangathan (PMS)
Village Rehi, Bara, Allahabad
Press Release – 25 July 2013
Save Kalawati’s Daughter. Prevent another Phoolan Devi, Sheelu Nishad, Nirbhay.
Pragatisheel Mahila Sangathan has severely condemned the Akhilesh Yadav govt, particularly IG Alld zone Alok Sharma, for failing to recover and secure Kalawati’s daughter who was kidnapped by armed goondas on the intervening night of 15 and 16 July from village Potaniha Purwa, Chakaur, Mau Chitrakoot.
Armed goondas jumped into Kalawati’s house from the thatched roof at 1 am, fired in the air, opened the latch to allow in other gang members, put the gun to Kalawati’s chest, pushed her, fired in the air to threaten the basti and forcefully took away her 15 year old daughter. While Kalawati went to the PS Mau to complain in the morning, SO Sri KP Singh showered choicest abuses saying Kalawati’s husband was a gangster and the girl had gone on her own. He knew these ‘wrong details’ in advance. Despite media reports and repeated complaints to SDM Mau, SP and DM Chitrakoot and registered complaints to DGP, CM, State HR and Women’s commissions no attempt has been made to trace the girl.
On July 20th the IG was complained to. He sent Kalawati back to the SO who promptly wrote out the complaint, but altered it to say the girl was coaxed and taken away.
On 20th July itself Prof Ranjana Kakkar, Prof. Nisha Srivastava and Utpala Shukla wrote a written complaint to the IG Zone identifying one gang leader Pahalwan and stating that the girl is possibly in his house in a named village in Allahabad district and that he should get raids conducted without divulging details to SO Mau. But he took no action. The mother has been force now to file a Habeus Corpus petition.
PMS has severely condemned IG Alok Sharma for not making any concrete move to recover the girl. Had he ordered arrest of the SO for crime against women, not registering the FIR, etc the SO would have disclosed the whereabouts of the girl. There are layers and layers of protective cover for the criminals in this govt. Misbehaviour by police with women continues unabated despite the Delhi rape case and Justice Verma Commission’s recommendations. The attitude of senior police officials in regard to crime against girls is painful.
PMS has decided to conduct a campaign on the issue all over the country to force the SP govt to act before another Phoolan Devi or Sheelu Nishad is born and before another dead rape victim’s body is recovered.
